When and where is the vegetable pick-up?
Wednesday from 5pm-8pm, from June through November, at Hudson Pride Connections Center.
What kinds of vegetables will I get?
The vegetables you receive are chosen by the farmer, and depend on what is in season on the farm and weather conditions. A full share will feed 2-3 people and have 8 different items. Half share options will receive 4-6 options weekly. Nolasco's Farm grows between 55-60 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and melons, so be assured that you will receive a wide variety of vegetables during the summer and fall. For a better idea of what and how much you will receive, have a look at the share lists from 2011, 2012, and 2013.
I live by myself. Can I purchase a smaller share?
Yes! Both Nolasco Farm and Tree-licious Orchards are offering small shares.
Can I share my CSA share with a friend, neighbor, co-worker, of family member?
Absolutely! Sharing your CSA membership is a great way to save money and still get fresh produce every week. Please include all names you would like to share with on your registration form. Each share is responsible for two work shifts. Anyone you share your CSA membership with can work these shifts.
If something happens unexpectedly, and you can't pick up your share, you can send someone else in your place. Please send us an email with their name and be sure to tell them to bring bags and all about our pick location. Better yet, tell them how awesome it is, and tell them to sign up with us this year!
Can I get any other farm-fresh foods through the Journal Square CSA?
Treelicious Farm will now offer fresh dessert options, made in house at their Just Fresh Bakery, with fresh produce from their orchard.
Monthly dessert share - large pie or cake with fruit delivered on 3rd Monday of each month; dessert will serve 6+, can be frozen and will be made from our fresh fruit in season; Dessert will be prepared at our Just Made Bakery on Wednesday morning for delivery. Bouquets will include an evolving combination of sunflowers, snapdragons, zinnias, eucalyptus, lavender, celosias, decorative grasses, and more.
How much does it cost and how can I pay?
Payment is by check or PayPal. You can pay for the whole share up front, or in 3 installments. Please contact us if you are interested in paying in installments or in our low-cost option for low-income families.
A limited number of low cost shares are available for low-income families. The vegetables in the low cost share are the same, but the price for the season is about half. Payments can be spread over the season, in advance of the 1st of each month. Please contact us if you have questions or are interested in purchasing a low-cost share.
Why do I have to work at the pick up site?
CSA’s are run entirely by their members and do not have paid employees, so each member has to work at the pick-up site about 2-3 times during the season. Shifts are about 1.5 hours in length, and we will make every effort to accommodate your schedule. Your participation makes everything run smoothly for all the members and is much appreciated by the farmer and the organizers!
Those that do not volunteer throughout the season will be charged a $25 fee (payable via PayPal).
If you are unable volunteer for a work shift due to a physical limitation, please contact us.
Shift responsibilities include set up/breakdown of one table in the back of Hudson Pride Connections Center, bring up containers from last week's delivery to return to farmers from the basement, set up of sign out sheet, flyers, food scale, and extra bags, coordination with farmers for delivery on site. (You will have all the contact numbers, including co-coordinators if needed.), check that share options are correct for delivery. (You will have a check list.), and organize share options and signage for what each share includes.

What is a Core Members Group?
Katie Sheehan started Journal Square CSA 8 years ago. After she moved, Caroline McAuliffe, a new 2014 member, stepped up to keep it going.
We are looking for 3-5 additional members to create a strong Core Members Group led by Charlie and Caroline. This group would share the responsibilities throughout the season. As a core member, you will gain a richer experience being apart of our CSA. You will have a relationship with our farmers, with Hudson Pride Community Center, and our great group of members. Commitments range from 10-20 hours over the 6 months of the season. Core member roles during the season include volunteer coordinator, communications coordinator (with farmers, pick up site, and food pantry) , as well as, blustering our web presence through social media (instagram/twitter/facebook) web updates, and newsletters.
If you are interested, please contact us at [email protected] for more information.
What the heck is a spaghetti squash and how do I cook it?
You will likely get vegetables that you have never had before. This is a great opportunity to try new foods and new recipes. We will help you out by providing recipes.
Can I meet the farmer and visit the farm?
Yes! Nolasco's Farm and Treelicious Orchards love visitors. We can take a group trip to the farm in the summer to take a tour and help with planting or harvesting. Check out pictures from Nolasco Farm and greenhouses from trips in 2011 and 2012.
What happens if I can't pick up my share?
Feel free to send a friend, neighbor, or fellow CSA member to pick-up your share if you can't make it on time or are away for a week. At 7pm sharp, any unclaimed shares and leftover vegetables will be donated to the soup kitchen at St. Paul's or St. Lucy's Shelter downtown.
This is great! How can I help spread the word?
Tell 5 Jersey City friends about the CSA. Flyers with more details about 2015 will be available soon. Better yet, let us know about any community meetings or events in your neighborhood.
